The Balance Point took first place in the Science/Nature/Environment category in the the 2018 TopShelf Indie Book Awards! It was also a finalist in the Current Events/Social Change category. It also won the New York City Big Book Awards, also in two separate categories: Environment, and Spirituality!
The Balance Point is a story of a search for something so mysterious that the main character doesn't even know what it is, or how to recognize it if he finds it. It touches on science, mathematics, economics, religion, and spirituality, in a manner that is both illuminating and disturbing.
Based on actual occurrences and factual scientific and environmental information, The Balance Point weaves a compelling adventure story into an ominous tapestry of planetary degradation. Jonathan is reluctantly goaded into satisfying the conditions of his deceased Aunt's cryptic Last Will, sending him on a puzzling journey to perplexing destinations. What he finds is worrisome, yet hopeful: something has gone missing in our collective human consciousness.
The timely message takes a critical subject and handles it in a clever way. This is an uncommonly provocative educational, and spiritual journey which ingeniously captivates the reader from the beginning. The story is so engrossing and the author's writing style so light and breezy that only after finishing the book will it hit the reader just how much information had been conveyed. The Balance Point is intriguing and suspenseful; all in all, a fascinating read.

The original Humanure Handbook was published in 1995 as a grad school thesis turned into an underground best-seller. The 4th edition is not just a new edition, but also a sequel of sorts. Of the original 10 chapters, five were revised and updated while the other five were replaced with ten new chapters, for a total of 15 chapters in the new edition (see contents in photo gallery).
This is a self-published book that no respectable publisher would touch with a ten-foot shovel. The 1st edition had a print run of 600 copies, which the author expected to watch decompose in his garage for the rest of his life. Yet, the book has sold 70,000 print copies in the U.S. alone, been translated in whole or in part into 19 languages and has been published in foreign editions on four continents.
The previous editions won numerous awards, including the Independent Publisher Outstanding Book of the Year Award, deeming the book "Most Likely to Save the Planet.” The book has been mentioned on such diverse media outlets as: NPR, BBC, CBC, Howard Stern, The Wall Street Journal, Playboy Magazine, the History Channel, Tree House Masters, and many other national and international venues.
The author draws from 40 years of research, experience, and travel to expand and clarify your knowledge and understanding of... your poop! Not only does the book address what to do with human turds, but it is also a priceless manual for anyone involved in composting, gardening, or even basic survival skills. There is no other book like this in print!
